BBDE Spotlight: Bill Ziegler's Journey as Champion of the Year!

Hello Best Buddies Delaware Supporters!

We are excited to share the inspiring journey of Bill Ziegler, the 2020 Champion of the Year for Best Buddies Delaware! In the middle of a global pandemic, when many non-profits struggled to stay afloat, Bill stepped up to the challenge of running for Champion of the Year, demonstrating resilience and determination.

Why Bill Took on the Challenge

Bill knew that non-profits were some of the hardest-hit organizations during the pandemic, as donations and support diminished in the face of economic struggles. But being part of Best Buddies, he saw firsthand the positive impact the organization made on the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). So, he decided to step into the spotlight and take on the challenge of raising funds during a time when resources were limited. Why Bill Took on the Challenge

Lessons from Bill’s Campaign

Throughout his campaign, Bill learned several key lessons that he'd like to share with this year's candidates:

  1. Have Fun: Enjoy the journey, and don’t stress. A campaign is meant to be rewarding, not draining.

  2. Generosity is Everywhere: Even during tough times, people and businesses surprise you with their willingness to help.

  3. Find the Right Campaign Manager: A reliable campaign manager can make all the difference. They’ll bring fresh ideas and extra hands to keep you on track.

  4. Involve Your Buddy: Whether your campaign manager or buddy, let them be part of your journey. Their support means everything.

  5. Don’t Fear 'No': Rejection is part of the process, but keep pushing forward.

  6. Variety in Auction Items: Don’t stick to one niche—diversify your asks and explore out-of-state donations to overcome Delaware's limited resources.

  7. Persistence Pays Off: Some people may want to help but can’t right away. Remind them, and don’t be afraid to ask more than once.

Bill's Advice for Future Champions

For Bill, the most important takeaway was that being a Champion of the Year isn’t just about winning the title. It’s about being a part of something bigger—helping the mission of inclusion. "The accolades are a bonus, but the experience itself is unforgettable," he shares. Bill encourages anyone interested in supporting Best Buddies to get involved, whether as a candidate or in other ways. "If you think someone would be great, tell them, but make sure they’re on board. Enthusiasm is key!"

We’re grateful to Bill for his continued support and the advice he offers future champions. His journey proves that even in the hardest of times, the mission of Best Buddies continues to thrive through the dedication of individuals like him.

As we approach the 2024 Champion of the Year event, we wish all candidates the best of luck and thank everyone who supports the mission of friendship and inclusion for individuals with IDD.

Together, we can make a difference!
